Seasons of Life – There’s No Such Thing as “Normal”

Four Seasons Tree I’ve been thinking about seasons lately, and how the weather plays havoc with what we like to think of as “normal.” For example, it’s cold when we expect it to be warm, or warm when we expect it to be cold. Flowers poke their heads out of the ground, coaxed by a warm spell, only to be killed off days later by the nighttime chill.

What gives??

Well, guess what? There’s no such thing as normal. Not when we’re talking about weather, and certainly not when we’re talking about life.

According to Feng Shui, our lives, like the weather, also follow certain cycles which you can think of as seasons. I’m not talking about “you’re born, you grow up, you die” here. I’m talking about what is happening in your life at any given moment, what you are feeling and going through, your goals, and your anxieties.

If you can figure out which season you are in in your life, you can see what’s working (and what’s not working) for you.

And now you’re thinking:

But how do I figure out which season I’m in?

Good question!

The Bagua can give you valuable insight. In fact, certain areas of the Bagua correspond to the seasons. You can start by choosing a season to focus on and looking at the two areas of the Bagua that correspond to that season. You will be able to determine pretty quickly where you are and – more importantly – if there are things that are messing with your mojo.

Since winter is fast-approaching, let’s start there…

Winter is represented by Career and Knowledge and Wisdom:

If you are feeling confused and overwhelmed, and not sure if you are doing what you are supposed to be doing, you should probably focus on this area (Career). Winter is a good time to plant the seeds that will eventually sprout and grow. It’s a time to reflect on where you may be now and where you want to go. The important thing to do if you are in this season of your life is to make sure you are spending time on what energizes you, your purpose.

This is where Knowledge and Wisdom come in: take time to learn more about yourself and your work. Imagine yourself nurturing the seeds that you have planted, and try to find inner strength in your daily practices. The energy in this area will support you in getting clear about your intentions, and will help give you the confidence that good things will come. Make sure you are focused on your intention and that your learning is keeping up with the changes both in your life and around you.

Spring is represented by Family and Physical Health and Wealth and Prosperity:

This is the time of new beginnings, taking action and creating synergy with others. It is manifested in the Family and Physical Health area. If you aren’t feeling inspired and on track, you are probably in this season. Seek support in business and in life. Make sure you are encouraging quality connections with others. And most importantly, take care of yourself. Pay attention to your eating and exercise habits. This will help you gain the strength and nourishment you need to succeed.

As you move into the Wealth and Prosperity area, you should be getting more comfortable with the changes taking place in your life. If you allow your intentions to manifest, you make it possible for your dreams to become reality. Take care to keep your finances under control, and think about what you can do to allow abundance to flow more freely into your life.

Summer is represented by Fame and Reputation and Love and Relationships:

If you feel you are not getting the recognition you deserve, or that your relationships are suffering, this is the area to focus on. Think about how you can become more visible to others, and more trustworthy and authentic. Work on your relationships. It may help to start with doing something – even just one thing – to create an environment that reflects who you truly are. Be genuine.

Autumn is represented by Children and Creativity and Travel and Helpful People:

If you are stuck in a rut with no fresh ideas or you feel you lack the help you need, this is where you need to focus your energy.  Think about what you can do to foster changes. Be creative! Get rid of things that aren’t serving you – which could include people, things, or simply what you may be tolerating. Then try to seek out people who may be able to help you reach your goals. The important thing is to get moving. You won’t get anywhere if you stand still. If you need a new perspective, take a trip.

We are all in different seasons in our lives. The important thing is to know where you are and to make choices that will help you get to where you want to be. Even that can change over time. You have to be flexible and willing to go with the flow. Remember: everything around us is alive, connected, and constantly changing. So we must follow suit!

To help you figure out which season of life you are in, you can:

  1. Ask yourself questions about the different areas of your life.
  2. Look to see what’s happening in those areas of your home (or office).
  3. Take actions to support yourself and create more of what you want.

Remember, there are natural forces at work all around you, and by tapping into them you will be able to go with the flow rather than stand in the way.

Embrace change. In the end, it is the only thing that is certain.
