Sanctuary of San Antonio

We decided to take a little detour on the way to Bilbao, to the Urkiola Natural Park, so Saucy could stretch her legs in some green space. She had adapted well to city life in San Sebastián, but she is a funny girl and won’t do her business unless she has some privacy. It was an overcast day and as we ascended toward our destination, it became very foggy and misty. We kept thinking we should turn around but then we came upon the most magical sight….a beautiful old sanctuary surrounded by magnificent hydrangeas! It is believed to have been built between the 8th and 9th centuries.

Two saints are venerated in Urkiola, which is in the heart of the Basque Country.

Saint Antón Abad (January 17)
Saint Antonio de Padua (June 13)

There were several hiking trails leading off from the site, and very few people because of the weather. We took our time walking around the perimeter and then peeking inside the church before continuing on to the city. And yes, Saucy finally managed to find the perfect place to do her business.
